The science of LifeGen Technologies involves caloric restriction and aging
genomics. Genomics is the study of an organism’s genes including location, structure, sequence, regulation and function.
The majority of disorders have a genetic basis so this research is
extremely relevant to the drug development process.
LifeGen scientists have recently completed a huge survey of aging-related genes. Specifically, 11,000 genes were measured in six different tissues of young and old mice (a total of over 500,000 individual measurements).
This survey has uncovered a small set of genes that may underlie the aging process, and is the subject of a patent application.
Research in this area will expand to include all genes in the mammalian genome. LifeGen is also discussing an agreement for access to large volume discounts with Affymetrix, the world's largest retailer of gene chips. The research of Drs. Weindruch and Prolla was the first published evidence to validate the use of Affymetrix gene chips in animal tissues.
LifeGen pioneered the use of gene chip technology in aging.
